VMware AppVolumes, formerly known as CloudVolumes, helps customers efficiently manage and deliver applications to virtual desktop environments, in real-time.

How it works without AppVolumes
2 Types of Desktops
Persistent  virtual desktops provide an experience that is similar to you owning and working in your own laptop. You have a persistent experience where that virtual desktop is to be used by only you. You can personalize the desktop however you’d like. You can add applications the way you want. And IT can manage this persistent desktop using Windows management tools that they’re used to using.
– It impacts by making storage costs pretty high as each user has its own environment and space needs to be allocated to each user even though they are not using it.
– If an application or image needs to be updated, it could take hours for the update to occur, making the process inefficient and expensive.

Non-persistent virtual desktops cost effective and easy to manage. IT only has to manage applications they entitle to the end-user. Storage space isn’t wasted on space that isn’t being used by the virtual desktop. Linked clones in non-persistent virtual desktops help lower storage space so that there is a base image that all linked clones use, instead of having to have a distinct base image per virtual desktop
since user installed applications don’t persist across sessions, user experience tends to be poor. And IT still has to deal with long wait and compose times for updates to images and applications to the virtual desktop.

How does Vmware AppVolumes helps?
With Vmware AppVolumes, both user experience and costs can be maintained as expected.

1. With just a click, IT can deliver application workloads to virtual desktops in seconds. Applications are delivered through VMDK virtual disks. IT can dynamically attach these virtual disks to virtual desktops, even when users are logged in to their desktop or logged out.
2. IT can manage the complete application lifecycle, from install to upgrade to replacement of the application. And IT can centrally manage applications at scale.
3. With central management, IT can update an application once and distribute to many devices in seconds thus saving storage costs.
4. No packaging, modification or streaming of the application is required. The applications perform as if they were natively installed. If another user logs into the same virtual desktop, the set of applications assigned to that user follows the user, providing just-in-time application delivery.
5. If an end-user installs his or her own applications, those applications can even follow that end-user as they move across non-persistent desktops, allowing for a persistent user experience.
6. With VMware AppVolumes, you can combine the benefits of persistent and non-persistent virtual desktops to deliver a truly stateless desktop. IT can update and deliver applications in seconds.
